Over a century ago, Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean used to be the world’s leading producer of geranium oil – a fragrant oil used in cosmetics and culinary dishes. But over the past 100 years the industry has all but died out on the island as countries like South Africa and China have stepped up commercial production.
