German police have warned anyone with a sweet tooth who may be offered large quantities of chocolate to report it after thieves made off with 20 tons of Nutella and other treats in a stolen lorry trailer.
The missing cargo, worth between €50,000 and €70,000 (£45k-£64k), also included Kinder Surprise eggs and Valparaiso chocolate fruit pearls.
“Anyone offered large quantities of chocolate via unconventional channels should report it to the police immediately,” police said in a statement to German newspaper Deutsche Welle.
The haul is believed to have been taken sometime over the weekend from the German town of Neustadt, situated northeast of Frankfurt.
Police spokesman Martin Ahlich said the thieves must have used a lorry of their own to tow the refrigerated trailer away.
“It’s not even clear if they were after the sweets or after the trailer at this point we don’t know what their motive was,” he added.
The same weekend, a trailer containing 30 tons of fruit juice was stolen from the northern town of Wittenberg.
